Every year, Hope College raises money for the DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids. It is our biggest fundraiser of the year...in fact, last year Hope College students raised over $112,000! However, getting to this amount takes the whole year. They throw almost bi-weekly events at the college and in the community. One of their bigger money events is the live and silent auction they hold.
And this is where Brent and I come in. Even though we are quite busy with all of our studies we thought it would be nice to go support Dance Marathon by visiting the auction tonight. Neither of us have ever been to an auction, so we were also a little curious. While looking at all the items up for bid, we saw that someone was donating a week-long timeshare in Orlando, FL, originally priced at $1500. Although, it seemed interesting, we did not take much time to speculate. We are cheap-skates and knew that this one would cost a pretty penny. But, then Wilma, my advisor and friend, kind of convinced us that it would be a good honeymoon deal. So, we decided to stick around...
The Timeshare was the second to last item, so we had to wait the hour and a half to get to it. In the mean time we each bought a picture frame and canvas. Mine is of Mother Teresa, and Brent's is of a beach chair (both very GOOD deals!). Then finally it was time to bid on the Timeshare. We both had decided that we would not go over $400, so we waited to see if it would get that low. The auction-eer started off at $1000, then went down to $850, then $700...$500, $400, and finally $300, so we nervously raised our number. But someone outbid us and went to $325, so we went to $350, then they went to $355, so we went to $375. Then there was a long pause...no one raised their numbers, and Brent and I both started to get nervous. Were we going to get it? How much longer? Is anyone going to outbid us? And then SOLD!!! We had won the timeshare for $375!!!
Ha ha! How crazy is that?!!? We also talked to the girl whose parents donated the timeshare, and she told us that we could exchange it for other locations if we wanted to too. They may or may not cost more, but it is a possibility.
I can't believe it. Brent and I have an option for a 8-person place in Florida for a week!! You can't get a hotel room for two nights for the same price!!! We are stoked!!!!
Brent and I Jumping For Joy!!
